Join NPR’s illustrious music critic, Ann Powers, as she examines how popular music shapes fundamental American ideals and beliefs. She’ll make the case that through our music, we communicate difficult emotions and truths about our most fraught social issues, most notably sex and race. Her new book, Good Booty: Love and Sex, Black and White, Body and Soul in American Music, deftly argues that popular music has become America’s primary erotic art form.

In a survey spanning more than a century of music, she’ll take us from nineteenth-century New Orleans through dance-crazed Jazz Age New York, to the cutting edge adventures of today’s web-based pop stars.

Powers will be in conversation with Riz Rollins, AKA DJ Riz, one of KEXP’s most beloved DJs.

Recorded live at The Summit from Town Hall Seattle Friday, September 8, 2017
