Seattle native Jim Lynch grew up immersed in the local boating culture. Some of his happiest childhood memories are from his time on the water. His fourth novel, Before the Wind, tells the story of the Johannssens, a blue-collar Seattle sailing family described as adventurous, fanatical, and pretty dysfunctional. The three grown siblings, who have scattered to the winds, are coaxed home by their father for one last yacht race. Lynch has won the Indies Choice Honor Book Award and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and was a finalist for the Dashiell Hammett Prize. The Seattle Times says he “observes like a journalist and writes like a poet.”
